SAT Subject Test Information

SAT Subject Tests focus on specific topics, such as math, literature, chemistry, and history. These topics are generally tested to high school level. There are a total of 20 SAT Subject Tests in five general subject areas: English, history, foreign languages, math, and the sciences. Each test is one hour long, and consists primarily of multiple choice questions. Each SAT Subject Test is scored from 200-800 points.

Many colleges either recommend or require two SAT Subject Tests on their applications, and scoring well on these Subject Tests can highlight your skills in certain fields. Most schools which do not explicitly require SAT Subject Tests still strongly recommend that students take them, and will consider SAT Subject Tests during the admissions process.

In particular, students applying to either an engineering school or an engineering program are strongly recommended to take the Math II SAT Subject Test, as well as one of the science SAT Subject Tests (Physics, Biology, or Chemistry).

Colleges that currently require two SAT Subject Tests include:
  • Amherst College
  • Barnard College
  • Brown University
  • California Institute of Technology (Math II + Science)
